Nambi Narayanan, Indian Space Research Organisation’s senior scientist who was in charge of the cryogenics division and instrumental in designing the system used in Chandrayaan, Mangalyaan, and PSLV of Indian Space Research Organisation was charged for revealing the information to enemies countries.

In 1994, Nambi Narayanan was arrested by the Kerala Police in charge of spying case, as per the allegations he was providing sensitive technical information to enemy countries. Now, after more than two decades he won a legal battle and regain his reputation.

Supreme Court has given him his lost reputation that was ruined beyond repair. As the court had said that it would order giving him compensation, which must be recovered from the officers who incarcerated him during the investigation.

According to the Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud’s statement, “We will clarify in our order that his reputation was dented…by this judgment his reputation was reinstated; and for the loss of reputation, we may order compensation of Rs 50 lakh-Rs 60 lakh…whatever. Let them pay.”

SC Restored His Lost Prestige

However, the bench was leading to the apex court’s order back in 1998 April justifying Narayanan including 5 more who accused in the case. They ordered payment of Rs 1 lakh compensation to each of them for spying.

The senior scientist made the approach to Supreme Court in 2015 against 3 cops who built the charges. But, the bench said, “it may still ask the Kerala government to conduct an inquiry against whosoever responsible and grant the compensation.”

When Kerala Government ban the approval given to the CBI and re-investigate the suit 6 eminent personalities of the Indian Space Research Organisation named as Satish Dhawan, UR Rao, TN Seshan, Prof. Yashpal, R. Narasimha and S Chandrasekhar in their open letter sent deep pain as:

“Many of us have known “Nambi” for over 20 years. He was the leader of the team of engineers sent to France for an acquisition of liquid rocket technology. He led with great ability ISRO teams vested with the responsibility of delivering the 2nd and 4th stages of the PSLV project. He was also for a while the leader of the Cryogenic engine project. We have always appreciated his deep commitment to technology development in the interest of ISRO and the nation. The arrest and interrogation of Nambi in the so-called ISRO espionage case and the attendant news paper publicity have done immense damage to his morale and even more damage to his innocent family.”

“The espionage case reveals that the country’s space programme of for that matter other strategic programmes, may no longer be immune to outside interference. These dangerous trends, if allowed to continue, can demotivate and demoralize the many hardworking and dedicated professionals who have made Indian achievements in these areas possible, usually for paltry compensations. Such actions are likely to derail these programmes and adversely affect national interest more severely than any foreign hand.”

Well, Chief Justice Dipak Misra said, “His reputation will stand restored.”
