7 Radar Systems developed by DRDO for Indian Armed Forces

India's Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), a laboratory operating under the esteemed Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), has achieved remarkable strides in indigenous radar technology development.

With a successful history of systems being inducted into the Indian Armed Forces, LRDE plays a pivotal role in DRDO's mission to reduce India's reliance on imported military hardware and bolster national defense capabilities.

Collaboration for Innovation

LRDE's success is underscored by strong partnerships with key players in the industry. Bharat Electronics Limited, a trusted public sector undertaking, along with cutting-edge private companies like Astra Microwave and Datapatterns, collaborate with LRDE in the production of these advanced radar systems.

Spotlight on Key LRDE Radar Systems

Let's explore some of the groundbreaking radar systems developed by LRDE:

1. INDRA Series (Indian Doppler Radar)

INDRA (Indian Doppler Radar)

A versatile 2D mobile surveillance radar designed for low-level target detection. It boasts integrated Identification Friend-or-Foe (IFF) systems, Track-While-Scan, and full tracking capabilities for maneuvering targets.

INDRA's success extends beyond the Indian Air Force and Army, with exports to Sri Lanka and a proven track record of effective deployment.

2. RAJENDRA Radar

RAJENDRA Radar

The cornerstone of the Aakash Air Defence System, this multifunction, electronically scanned phased array radar employs Passive Electronically Scanned Array (PESA) technology.

It guides Aakash missiles with exceptional precision and fulfills a trifecta of surveillance, tracking, and guidance functions.

RAJENDRA's operational capabilities are impressive, with the capacity to track 64 targets and engage 4 simultaneously within an 80 km range and 18 km altitude.

3. Central Acquisition Radar (3D-CAR)

Central Acquisition Radar (3D-CAR)

A state-of-the-art, S-Band 3D radar tailored for both the Indian Army (Rohini variant) and Indian Air Force (Revathi variant).

Offering a staggering range of over 180 km, 3D-CAR excels in detecting low-altitude targets and supersonic aircraft breaching Mach 3 speeds.

Advanced digital receivers, programmable signal processors, and exceptional mobility on high-performance TATRA vehicles are hallmarks of this powerful system.

4. Swathi Weapon Locating Radar (WLR)

Swathi Weapon Locating Radar (WLR)

This C-Band pulse Doppler radar has proven vital for India's defense strategies, particularly along the Line of Control (LOC).

It reliably locates hostile artillery, mortars, and rocket launchers, while simultaneously tracking friendly fire for accuracy adjustments. Its ability to track up to 7 targets concurrently makes it an indispensable asset.

5. Ashwini Radar

Ashwini Radar

Designed for precision, this 4D Low Level Transportable Radar tracks hostile targets within a 200 km range.

As an active phased array radar, it boasts superior detection capabilities for high-speed and maneuverable targets.

6. Arudhra Radar

Arudhra Radar

A true powerhouse, this Medium Power Radar (MPR) employs active phased array, multifunction 4D technology.

It automatically detects and tracks aerial targets spanning a vast spectrum, from fighter aircraft to slower-moving objects.

Features like 2D Digital Beam-forming and real-time software enhance its capabilities.

7. PJT-531 Battle Field Surveillance Radar

PJT-531 Battle Field Surveillance Radar

A force multiplier in the truest sense, this man-portable J-Band radar system provides short-range battlefield and perimeter surveillance.

Deployed by the Indian Army and BSF along the LOC, and with successful exports to Indonesia and Sudan, its effectiveness is undeniable.

The Future is Bright

LRDE continues to push the boundaries of innovation. Keep an eye on advancements in AI-powered radar optimization, enhanced target discrimination, and expanded integration of these systems into India's growing network of defense technologies.
