The collaboration of India and Russia for developing BrahMos missiles now can see a new height. The missile whose current speed is 2.8 mach, could reach up to the speed of 3.5 mach (the unit for measuring the speed of sound) in two years. MD and CEO of BrahMos Aerospace, Sudhir Mishra recently revealed the speed of the BrahMos missile.

On Tuesday, Mishra while interacting with the media on the sidelines of a Godrej Aerospace event also said that in the upcoming 4 years, the speed of BrahMos missile could even reach to 5 mach. This could be made possible by optimising engines and materials of the missiles. But, for going to attend the speed higher than 5 mach, it will require a scramjet engine which needs at least seven to ten years to be built.

The current speed of BrahMos missile is 2.8 times faster than the speed of sound traveling. DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization) of India and NPO Mashinostroyenia of Russia have jointly developed it.

To achieve a speed up to 5 mach, the scramjet engine is required and BrahMos Aerospace is already developing it. CEO Mishra said the newer materials would be required for developing scramjet engines which could withstand ultra-high speeds and vibration. It would take 10 years. Although, BrahMos is independently developing the engine with some contribution of Russian industry in it.

Testing of BrahMos

For using in BrahMos missiles, the 100th set of airframe assemblies given to BrahMos Aerospace at Godrej Aerospace event. The said airframe assemblies are a part of the missiles’ fuel management system which is manufactured by Godrej Aerospace. Godrej Aerospace is a unit of Godrej and Boyce.

Not only that, but BrahMos Aerospace has already ordered more 100 airframe assemblies as the next batch. Godrej Group’s industrial complex will manufacture the next batch of airframe assemblies in Mumbai.c and BrahMos program have collaborated since its inception in 2001.

Jamshyd Godrej, Chairman and Managing Director of Godrej & Boyce stated that they are capable to develop two frames in a month and that capability would be doubled soon. The company will take approximately 10 years to develop the manpower, capability, and equipment for making missile components.

Godrej Aerospace is already in the process of increasing its operations, for which there is no need for more investment for machinery. But additional manpower should be added. The company is trying to organize itself to give more on the assembly line. The investment phase for the company has ended, now it is the production phase.
