The BSF suspects that armed infiltrators are sneaking inside the Kathua district through a tunnel and BSF has launched a massive operation across International Border ( IB) to uncover that tunnel, a senior official of BSF has told. BSF’s IG, Jammu Frontier, Ram Awtar said, “An operation has been started to uncover the tunnel. It is going on.”
A large number of troops, several JCB, and other types of manpower have been inducted into the area by BSF to conduct the search. Awtar said, “the terrain is like the riverine Chambal valley belt but we are at it.”
Pakistan is trying to push infiltrators across the border and this has been taking seriously by BSF as DG KK Sharma had termed it as “very serious” attempts by Pak. The latest instances came in light before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir on May 19.
The armed infiltrators have been using six cross-border tunnels across the Indo-Pak border in Jammu area since 2012 and it has been detected by BSF and Army troops. Pakistan was using these tunnels to infiltrate militants into Jammu and Kashmir.
The BSF’s 62nd battalion has detected an unfinished tunnel ahead of the border fence along IB in Arnia belt of Jammu district during a search operation on September 30, 2017. The detected tunnel was measured about 12 to 14 feet long with a height of 3 feet and width of two-and-a-half feet.
Also, a tunnel originating from the Pakistani side along the IB was detected on February 14, 2017, in Samba district. In Ramgarh sector, the BSF detected 20-meter tunnel ahead of the fence into Indian territory during an anti-tunneling exercise. Earlier, on March 3, 2016, BSF detected a 30-meter-long tunnel from Pakistan to the Indian side in the RS Pura sector of district Jammu.
Before this, a 23 meters long caved-in portion of a tunnel was also detected in Chillyari border belt in Samba district on May 2014. In July 2012, the BSF had found a 400-meter long cross-border tunnel along the IB in Samba sector. In August 2014, a tunnel was also discovered which was approximately 130 to 150 meters long along LoC (Line of Control) and originated on the Pakistan side in Jammu region’s sensitive Pallanwala area.
As of now, ahead of PM’s visit to J&K, five militants are suspected to have sneaked into Kathua district and BSF has failed to detect the tunnel. The villagers of Bobiyan and Londi have been praying for early detection so that Pakistan won’t be able to push more armed infiltrators. Bobiyan villager Dalbir Singh stated, “We pray for early detection of this tunnel. Our fears are increasing day by day due to the delays.”
