What Is Ejecting:

Before knowing what does a pilot feel while ejecting, you need to know what is ejecting! An ejection works through an ejection seat which is also called an ejector seat. It is a system designed to rescue the pilot or other crew of an aircraft(mostly in the military) in an emergency time. In this system, the seat is propelled out of the aircraft by an explosive charge carrying the pilot with it.

For a pilot, the ejection is a nightmare and it is the last thing that a pilot ever wants to do due to its turbulent process. In ejection seat, the rockets fire under the seat and blow the pilot or a person from its cockpit with a full force that can possibly break collarbones.

How It Works:

The ejection seat works due to the rocket installed under the seat. A serious of little white tubes with exhaust outlet nozzles having solid rocket fuel in them Burns for 0.2 seconds and eject the seat. It ejects the seat about 100 ft in the air.

When And At Which Altitude The Chute Opens:

The main chute is designed to come out automatically and it brings the pilot down to the ground quickly and safely. But, if a pilot ejects at the altitude of 20,000-30,000 ft, they cannot open the main chute straightway as it takes approx 20 minutes to bring the pilot down to the ground and there can be a shortage of oxygen. Though an oxygen bottle attaches to the seat of oxygen.

But, when it’s below 10,000 ft, the drogue and the main chute activates at the same time. The whole process is entire of three seconds from pulling the ejection gun to the opening of a chute.

How Serious The Injury Can Be And The Chances Of Survival:

The ejection process is to save the pilot and crew member from the fatal accident and hence it is designed with the full care that can save the life of the pilot. There are a 92% chances of survival in the ejection process. However, the injuries are more prone to see. About one in three cases will get an injury of spinal as the seat gets ejected with full force and against the gravity of 14 to 16 times. There is also the risk of a leg fracture, and shoulder and neck injury. Ejection is the worst alternative.
