How Can I Join Indian Army As An Officer?

There are different ways to join the Indian Army as an officer. This is the dream job of many defence aspirants who want to see themselves in olive green proudly. India is the only nation where youth intentionally and eagerly willing to join armed forces to serve their motherland with proud, no matter what sacrifices and threats they will face. Although it is an adventurous job and we Indians love the adventure very much. So, guys there are 9 different ways to join the Indian Army as an Officer-

1. National Defence Academy(NDA) or Naval Academy (NA) – This is 10+2 level exam. Candidates who passed 10+2 or class 12th appearing candidate can be part of this examination. Entrance exam for NDA is conducted twice in a year by the Union Public Service Commission(UPSC). The candidates who cleared entrance examination will get call latter from Service Selection Board(SSB) for the five days test at SSB center. If the candidate gets selected or listed in NDA or NA merit list, qualified candidates join NDA/NA. After completing the course they are sent to the service academy according to their choice they opt during joining for their pre-commissioning training.

2. 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme(TES)– The candidates who qualified 10+2 exams with an average of 70% in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry are eligible to apply for this entry scheme. If selected at SSB, then candidates will go through the basic military training for 1 year at the Academy and thereafter go through 3 years engineering course in selected/opted streams before getting the permanent commission. 1 year post-commission training will be provided for Arms/Services into which they are commissioned.

3. University Entry Scheme(UES)– Pre-final year students are eligible to apply for the permanent commission in notified engineering branches. Screening test conducted by Army Personnel deputed by Army Headquarter in the college campus. Selected candidates will be detailed for the training at Military Academy, Dehradun according to their positions in the final order of merit list. Engineering graduates who possess the prescribed qualification will be granted one year antedate for purpose of seniority, promotion, and increments of pay.

4. Technical Graduate Scheme (TGS) – The candidates who are studying in the final year or completed BE/ B TECH in the notified streams can join IMA through Technical Graduate Scheme. Check out for the advertisement in the leading Newspaper/ Employment news in the month of May/June and Nov/Dec every year.

5. Short Service Commission Entry (Technical) – This entry scheme provides opportunities to the eligible technical graduates or postgraduates into Technical Arms. After getting selected from SSB the candidate will undergo through the training period of 140-149 weeks at OTA, Chennai.

6. Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) – CSDE is also conducted twice in a year by UPSC. The graduate candidates or the candidates who are in final year can apply for this examination. The candidates who qualified this exam have to prove their eligibility by clearing SSB interview and medical tests. Selected candidates will go through the training period of 18 months at Indian Military Academy/ Naval Academy/ Air Force Academy for the permanent commission. For Short Service Commission have to complete 11 months training at Officer Training Academy (OTA).

7. NCC Special Entry Scheme – Special entry for officer recruitment is advertised through the Employment newspaper / Regional Newspaper including leading newspaper in the month of June and December. The candidates who have done NCC ‘C’ certification with minimum ‘B’ grade, can apply through their NCC Battalion/Unit from where you got NCC ‘C’ certificate.

8. Judge Advocate General Entry – This entry provides the opportunities for law graduates with minimum 55% aggregate marks in LLB and between 21 to 27 Years of age can apply under this entry.

9. Territorial Army – The Territorial Army is the second line of defence. Its current role is to provide assistance to civil administrative bodies dealing in natural calamities and maintenance of essential services in situations where the life of the community is affected or the security of the country is threatened and to provide units for the Regular army as and when required.
