Indian PTI news agency reported today that Paramilitary commandos may soon be deployed to guard the Indian embassy and diplomatic staff in Iraq as they have received threats from ISIS.

The Ministries of Home and External Affairs has approved for deployment of an armed squad at the complex located in the Al Mansour area of Baghdad. The Central Reserve Police Force has been given the job to provide its best combat personnel.

“Given the constant threat of the ISIS terror group in Iraq, it was being discussed for a long time that the Indian embassy there should have a professional security cover,” a senior official privy to the development said.

“The effort to send the paramilitary commandos is a move in that direction. However, the final approval for stationing the squad in Baghdad is yet to be given by the government,” the official said.

Iraq has seen bombings and suicide attacks recently and there has been no threat specifically for the Indian embassy as of now.

“The effort to send the paramilitary commandos is a move in that direction. However, the final approval for stationing the squad in Baghdad is yet to be given by the government,” the official said as reported by PTI news.

The commanders will not only guard the embassy but will also give cover to the senior officials present in the embassy.

The total strength of the contingent will be 45-50. However, the final approval for the deployment of commandos in Iraq is not announced yet by the government. The commandos who will be deployed are the ones who performed the best in jungle warfare and were the best of the CoBRA commandos.
