15 Amazing Facts you should know about Indian Air Force

Indian Air Force plays a significant role in peacekeeping of our country and also for the UN, this unit of the Indian armed forces, has been on four wars along with other major operation

Looking at their uniform, at least once the thought of joining the military comes to our mind and we are filled with pride. Their stories, battles, facts and bravery are the reason make us both sad and happy at the same time. Someone signs up for fighting for you, protecting you so you can live safely and half of the country doesn’t even know about them and that is just plain sad. It’s important to know about these brave souls. And be thankful that forced recruitment never happened. Otherwise everyone would have been cribbing.

There have been facts about the Air Force that are mind-blowing and sometimes the conditions so harsh that it is very difficult to believe. You may know about them or not. But if you don’t, you should now at least.

1. Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Hindustan Aeronautics Limited initiated the LCA programme in 1983 to develop replacement aircraft against the ageing MiG-21. After Initial Operation Clearance (IOC) status, Tejas is officially inducted for Final Operation Clearance (FOC) on 10 January 2014. IAF plans to order ten squadrons and other equipment as well for the development of the equipment.

2. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) HAL was formed way back in 1948, a year after the country’s independence and currently it is the largest defence firm in the public sector. Even after being technologically inferior to Pakistan Air Force.

3. Padmavati Bandopadhayay The first woman Air Marshall of the Indian Air Force, she is the second woman in IAF to be promoted to a three-star rank. She was awarded the Vishist Seva Mandal (VSM) for her conduct during Indo-Pak War 1971 and has shown courage many times.

4. Marshall of the Indian Air Force: The honorary rank of the Marshal of the Indian Air Force is the highest achievable rank there is among the ranks in Air Force. This rank is equivalent to the rank of Field Marshal of the Indian Army. Only one person till date has been able to achieve this rank and the officer is Arjan Singh, who was promoted to a five-star rank.

5. Indian Air Force is the fourth largest and professionally acclaimed strategic Air Force in the world and operates around 33 squadrons. We did come a very long way.

6. Garud Commando Force: This special operation unit consists of approximately 1500 personnel. The unit derbies its name from Garuda, the divine mythical bird in Hindu Mythology. It’s tasked with the protection of critical installations and Frey take control under hostilities.

7. Officer Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon is the only IAF officer who has been awarded the Param Vir Chakra, in recognition of lone defence of Srinagar Air Base against PAF during Indo-Pak war 1971.

8. Siachen Glacier: The highest battlefield in the world, at 22,000 ft above the sea level, it is the highest Air Force station of IAF.

9. Change of the roundel: The logo on the planes and flag have changed four times since 1933.

10. World record of highest landing By performing the highest landing of C-130J at Daulat Beg Oldi (Ladakh) at the height of 16614 feet, IAF created a world record.

11. Largest transport aircraft Operating C-17 Globemaster 3, C-130J Super Hercules, and 2-76, IAF became the only airforce to do this job.

12. AFNet: The Air Force network, a state-of-the-art, fully secure and reliable network and gigabyte information grid is well managed by IAF.

13. Biggest civilian rescue by helicopters Operation Rahat was the biggest civilian rescue operation in the world carried out by any air force with the use of helicopters.

14. Sukhoi-Su 30 MKI Aircraft The now frontline aircraft of the country, this was acquired from Russia in 1996. Even with suspicions around the deal, govt. handled everything brilliantly.

15. Sir Thomas Walker Elmhirst This Air Marshall is the prime reason that IAF is an independent service under no control of the army.
