1. The Foundation stone of Air Force Academy was laid by the President of India Dr. Zakir Hussain, on 11 October 1967.

2. The Air Force Academy was established in 1969 and started in 1971. Dundigal Air Force Academy is situated 25 km away from the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, spread over 7,000 acres of land.

3. Air Force Academy is set upto to train the cadets of all streams at One place. Along with Flying, Technical and Ground Duty Branches this academy also trained officers of the Army and Navy.

4. Officers from Indian Army, Navy and Coast Guard as well as officers from friendly foreign countries are also occasionally trained at the Air Force Academy.

5. There are 4 types of training conducted at the academy:

– Flying training
– Air Traffic Control Officers’ training
– Ground Duty Officers’ training
– Joint Services training

6. Pilots who pass out as fighter pilots serve in front-line combat squadrons equipped with SU-30, MiG-29, MiG-21, Mirage-2000, Tejas and Jaguar aircraft in the Indian Air Force.

7. Those who are trained in flying transport aircraft will be going to fly the IAF’s heavy multi engined IL-76 aircraft, C-17 and the twin-engine multi role AN-32 transport aircraft, besides HS-748 and the Dornier light utility transport aircraft.

8. Trainees who join as a helicopter pilot learns to fly at treetop height and landing in remote areas. They also get trained in flying helicopter gunships like Indian developed Dhruv, MI-26 heavy-lift choppers for challenging mission like casualty evacuation, para dropping of troops and air lifting of supplies.

9. Each and every officer of Indian Air Force needs to undergo basic training at Air Force Academy.

10. Air Force Academy conduct its own exams where students were invited to Air Force Academy to give the AFCAT exam.
