How to join the Indian Navy after 12th?

The early bird gets the worm. It is always advisable to join the armed forces as young as possible for a long and illustrious career. The Indian Navy is no different. This article will be about the various ways in which you can join Indian Navy after your 12th is over.

1. UPSC Entry​

The Union Public Service Commission holds an examination, twice a year, for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Indian Naval Academy (INA) as Permanent Commission (PC) entries. Candidates are eligible to compete on completion of the 10+2 Examination or while in the 12th standard. UPSC shortlists candidates after written examinations. After that candidates are sent to the various Service Selection Boards located at Bangalore, Bhopal and Coimbatore. Marks of qualified candidates are forwarded to UPSC for making the final merit list. Candidates who are in the merit list as well as are medically fit are intimated for appointment to NDA/INA as cadets. On completion of the NDA/INA training, the Naval Cadets are sent to training ships at Kochi for Naval sea training.

2. 10+2 Cadet Entry​

This scheme is for permanent commission in the Executive, Engineering and Electrical branches of the Indian Navy. Under this scheme, candidates with 10+2 qualifications, after selection through the Services Selection Board, are sent to the Indian Naval Academy for the B.Tech Course. On completion of the 4 year course, they are granted Permanent Commission in the Executive, Electrical and Engineering branches of the Indian Navy. Admission Notifications are issued twice a year and call letters for Indian Navy SSB are issued on the basis of JEE Main marks.

Eligibility Criteria​

Nationality: A candidate must either be (i) a citizen of India, or ii) a subject of Bhutan, or (iii) a subject of Nepal, or (iv) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 01st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or (v) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Govt. of India
Certificate of eligibility will not, however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

Marital Status & Gender : Only male unmarried candidates are eligible.

Age : Candidates must be between the age of 16.5 to 19 yrs

Educational Qualifications : Candidates must either have passed 12th or are appearing for 12th examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as their subjects.

Physical Standards : Physical eligibility criteria are mentioned in Appendix – IV of the NDA/NA notification issued by UPSC.
