China had sold its sophisticated missile defense system to Pakistan. This missile was considerably superior to its home-made missile systems. This move is a hint to a dangerous level in the arms race in sub-containment with nuclear forces i.e., India and Pakistan. The countries engaged in fighting less intensely in Jammu and Kashmir, with the help of the ISI and the Pakistan army.
The enemy country has been trying to put together a missile defense system to thwart India.
Pakistan test fired Ababeel, MIRVs( multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle) successfully in January last year. The missile is capable of delivering multiple warheads. This missile took the arms race to another level with Pakistan. The government declared the missile to ensure the survivability of Pakistan’s ballistic missiles in the growing regional Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) environment. This missile was an answer to Indian’s BrahMos missile.
BrahMos of India:
China’s People’s Liberation Army Daily about two years ago in a statement had said that, “The deployment of BrahMos missile is bound to increase the competition and antagonism in the China–India relations and will have a negative impact on the stability of the region.” The BrahMos missile of India can travel at low altitude and at supersonic speed which makes it an almost invisible weapon to be detected.
Defense of Pakistan:
Pakistan’s nuclear physicist Dr. Samar Muarakmand, the man behind conducting a nuclear test after India tested its own in 1998 had said Pakistan’s missile defense system was prepared by students of government college University. They are those students who worked abroad in NASA and other organizations. On close analysis, it is clear that Pakistan has lack of depth in developing a missile defense system.
Pakistan’s Shaheen & Gauri:
Shaheen and Gauri are two missiles of Pakistan which with the Babur cruise missiles boasts of reaching targets far into their enemy country India. Pakistan due to its inability to develop a sound missile defense system bought Russian-made S-400 missile defense system, says a report.
S-400 system’s total cost was a mega $2.5 billion. So, Pakistan decided to purchase the Chinese system which was very cheap and easily accessible because in Pakistan several Chinese-based projects were already operating with the CPEC project, which was operating on the whole inclination.
India’s program of war:
India to deal with new arms race with China has its hands full. India has successfully launched an advanced anti-missile system with the short-range Prithvi ballistic missiles at Chandipur a few months ago. Also, the elite club of Russia, US, and Israel had been joined by India in 2007.
The missile shield of Pakistan:
According to reports, “It usually comes with a pair of high-performance telescopes equipped with a laser ranger, high-speed camera, infrared detector and a centralized computer system that automatically captures and follows moving targets.” Now India will be under pressure to showcase weapons and pressurize more resources than Pakistan’s better missile shield.
The arms race has now entered into a dangerous three-way battle. US President’s administration would be watching Pakistan and China’s next moves very minutely. India should now have to walk carefully, do not run in the race, it will have to balance between development and defense.
