When Para SF conducted a daring cross-border raid at Chacro back in 1971

One of the most badass operation done by Indian Army was Chachro Raid by 10 PARA SF during 1971 Indo-Pak War where elite commandos of PARA SF were tasked to strike Pakistani positions almost 80 km deep inside Pakistani territory at a time where there was no GPS, Drone or Air Support!

The raid was conducted on December 5, 1971 when men from 10 PARA divided into two seperate units : Alpha and Charlie led by Lt Col Bhawani Singh infiltrated deep inside enemy territory and carried out raids on enemy positions at Chachro and Virwah. For this operation Lt Col Bhawani Singh was awarded the Mahavir Chakra.

The team traveled over 50 km in the enemy territory hitting Pakistani positions. The Alpha team lead by Brigadier Abraham Chacko attacked Chachro where most enemies fled their positions thinking that their approaching Jongas (an Indian LSV used at that time) were approaching tanks.

After the mission 20 Rajput took over the town with 17 Pakistani casualties and took 12 prisoners with no casualties on Indian side.

Next at Virawah and Nagarparkar, the assault took place which did not last long and were captured on December 8. Alpha Group launched their assault at Islamkot but found the whole town empty but were ambushed at Lunio where the enemy was killed on spot and rest taken as PoWs.

Almost 36 enemies were killed at raid on Chachro and Islamkot with 22 taken as PoWs.

Brigadier Swai Bhawani Singh, who was the Maharaja of Jaipur perfectly knew the terrain he was operating in and was called ‘Tiger’ by his men.

This operation was indeed a surgical operation and in my opinion perhaps the most badass one.
